Zusammenfassung

Die thüringischen Beobachtungen des Riesenabendseglers, Nyctalus lasiopterus (Schreber, 1780), werden einer kritischen Bewertung unterzogen. Das betrifft insbesondere die kaum beachteten Beobachtungen von Bechstein (1792, 1793, 1796-1797, 1801) und die häufig unkritisch zitierten Beobachtungen von Brehm (1827, 1829).

Ein Vergleich der morphologischen Daten legt die Vermutung nahe, dass es sich bei allen Beobachtungen um Nyctalus noctula oder Nyctalus leisleri handelt. Das wird auch durch historische und aktuelle Angaben zu Häufigkeit und Verbreitung der Nyctalus-Arten untermauert.

Sowohl Brehm als auch Bechstein hielten offenbar den erst 1817 von Kuhl beschriebenen Kleinen Abendsegler für N. noctula und verwechselten deshalb den Großen Abendsegler mit N. lasiopterus.

Abstract

Critical evaluation of historical observations of the giant noctule (Nyctalus lasiopterus) in Thuringia

We critically evaluate records on the Greater (Giant) Noctule, Nyctalus lasiopterus (Schreber, 1780), from Thuringia, especially with respect to observations by Bechstein (1792, 1793, 1796-1797, 1801), which nowadays are only rarely mentioned, and to the observations by Brehm (1827, 1829), which are frequently cited uncritically.

Comparing the morphological data it appears very likely that all observations refer to Nyctalus noctula or Nyctalus leisleri, this conclusion being strengthened by the historical and current abundance and distribution on the Nyctalus species.

Apparently Brehm as well as Bechstein confused the Lesser Noctule, first described by Kuhl in 1817, with N. noctula and therefor mixed up the Common Noctule with N. lasiopterus.
